The Goodwood Festival of Speed was founded in 1993 by Lord March, now the Duke of Richmond, with a vision to bring motorsport back to the historic Goodwood estate.

Motor racing had long been associated with the estate. The nearby Goodwood Motor Circuit hosted major races after World War II but stopped operating in the 1960s. When the Duke of Richmond took over the estate decades later, he wanted to revive its motorsport heritage but faced planning restrictions that prevented traditional racing events.


His solution was brilliantly simple. Instead of reopening the circuit, he created a hillclimb event on the estate’s private roads, allowing historic racing cars and motorcycles to run through the grounds in front of Goodwood House.


The first festival attracted around 25,000 spectators, an impressive turnout for a brand-new event. Over the years the festival expanded from a single day to a four-day celebration and now welcomes around 150,000 attendees annually.
